  1. Hello Rachel, I agree with others that you are doing well to be back at work. I also had about 2 weeks in ICU and started a phased return to work after 4 months, but expect it will be at least a year after that before I'm back to full time work. Good and bad days are normal too, as recovery has its ups and downs. It definitely doesn't feel like a linear progression. It might take you some time to find out what makes you tired and what doesn't. It certainly wasn't obvious to me, but mental activity is much more tiring than physical exercise now. I find any noisy or chaotic environment exhausting, but running, swimming, or any other form of exercise restores my energy. I lost a lot of weight and most of my muscle mass in hospital, so physio and exercise was essential for my recovery and I've continued to build on that. You might find something like yoga or pilates is more suitable to start with. Spending time with my young children is usually very tiring, so I'd imagine teaching would be even more so. I can't multitask or concentrate when there is any sort of noise or other distraction. I think I've become better at focussing on one task though which definitely helps, but I don't know if that is possible in your job. Forgetfulness is also something I can relate to, especially when I'm tired. Matt
  2. Hello Hamrock, Generally, I find any sort of relaxation or exercise is helpful. Physically I'm in pretty good shape now, but can get mentally fatigued quite easily. You might find yoga and / or mindfulness / meditation helpful. Some forms of yoga can be quite physical but other are much more gentle and relaxing. Usually you can just participate to your ability and focus on breathing though. Mindfulness or mediation is also easy and should help. Generally it just involves sitting still and concentrating on your breathing or concentrating on parts of your body. There are lots of apps (e.g. Calm, Headspace) and resources on the internet (youtube) that can get you started at least, so I'd suggest trying that. Matt

    Hello Dave, Yes, it sounds like what you are feeling is normal. Everyone has a different recovery, but it does take a long time and you have to pace yourself. Look for small improvements and build on them. I'm a little younger than you, and was also fit and healthy, and cycled to work every day. My case of sepsis developed after a strep a infection in my throat. I spent 2 1/2 weeks in intensive care, and was in a coma, on a ventilator, and dialysis machine for the most of the first week. I spent another 3 months at home before returning starting to return to work, and expect it will be another 6 months before I'm working full time again. Physical recovery has been very slow, but steady. I lost a lot of weight in hospital, and it took me a few days just to get out of bed and then to walk. I've tried to do some form of exercise at least twice a week, starting with basic functional exercises at home and later progressing to a gym. I'm now cycling to work again each day and also going to a gym for weight training twice a week. I'm still a long way from the strength and fitness I had before though. Matt
